Bernradio – Your Gateway to the World.
Bernradio is a globally active maritime radio station which the Swiss Confederation appointed Swisscom Broadcast AG to operate from 1 January 2009. Bernradio provides its customers with high-quality data services on shortwave worldwide. The Swiss maritime radio station uses the most advanced technologies available: new modulation methods enable transmission speeds on standard maritime radio channels that can easily compare with conventional satellite services. To guarantee global availability, Bernradio has joined with international partners in the Global Link Network (GLN). HEB (Hotel, Echo, Bravo) – that is the call sign for Bernradio. The service scope, ease of use and price of our data services on shortwave for shipping on the open sea meet the highest expectations. Cargo ships, fishing vessels and chartered boats can stay in constant direct contact with their shipping companies and charter bases via Bernradio. A wide range of communication and information facilities is available to crews: Bernradio guarantees the operational and technical security of the shortwave service in all circumstances. In exceptional circumstances (times of crisis or war that may occur somewhere in the world) we are under an obligation to maintain the shortwave connections with ships sailing under the Swiss flag as well as with other users. Data, voice and fax connections on shortwave will work, even when communication via satellite is difficult or impossible. Bernradio was launched in 1922 as Marconi Radio Station AG. Over the decades, the maritime radio station has been managed by various operators. Bernradio was originally set up as a news channel to guarantee independent communication for Switzerland. This was of great importance during the Second World War, in particular, in maintaining the safety of supplies to the country: Bernradio safeguarded independent communication with the sea-going vessels sailing with supply goods for the country. Today Bernradio presents itself as a modern service company with a range of services that benefit shipping companies, fishing and ocean-going fleets and even yacht owners throughout the world. The receiver installation for Bernradio is located in Riedern near Bern and the transmitter is in Prangins (Waadt canton). Global Communication at Sea on Shortwave.
